Projects
Project Experience. Practical Expertise.
DBE’s project work spans sugar, ethanol, bioenergy and integrated agricultural developments. The projects below include current DBE initiatives and selected experience gained by our team members across engineering, feasibility studies, project management and operational consulting.
DBE Current and Recent Projects
Selected DBE assignments spanning project development and feasibility studies.
01 – Integrated Sugarcane and Bioenergy Development
Gaza Province, Mozambique
DBE is developing a proposal for an integrated agricultural and industrial development linked to the proposed ADIRA Mapai Dam and an associated irrigation area of approximately 200,000 hectares along the Limpopo floodplain.
The proposal comprises up to four adjoining 25,000-hectare irrigated sugarcane estates. Each estate would support an integrated processing complex producing fuel-grade and domestic ethanol, sugar where applicable, and electricity through bagasse-fired co-generation.
DBE and ADIRA have agreed a formal framework covering project development, financing and implementation. DBE’s proposed scope includes project structuring, agricultural planning, engineering and technology assessment, financing coordination, operations support and market development.
Approval for the initial project is anticipated in the first quarter of 2027.
02 – Biofuel Estate Pre-feasibility Study
Nigeria
DBE undertook a pre-feasibility study for a proposed sugarcane and cassava estate incorporating ethanol, jet fuel and co-generation.
The Kebbi Biofuel Project brings together 3D Hitech, NNPC and the Government of Kebbi State. The development concept includes a 20,000-hectare cassava plantation and a processing plant producing fuel-grade ethanol for blending with petrol.
The project is being relocated to Lagos State, with approval anticipated in the first quarter of 2027. DBE expects to be appointed as the Client Representative.
03 – Integrated Ethanol and Co-generation Studies
Makhathini Flats, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
DBE undertook pre-feasibility studies for two proposed estates producing ethanol, jet fuel and electricity from sugarcane and cassava.
The development concept uses land suitable for high-yielding sugarcane, with cassava proposed for areas less suited to sugarcane cultivation.
Each estate is projected to require approximately 25,000 hectares of sugarcane and 9,000 hectares of cassava. Projected annual production per estate is approximately:
- 310 million litres of fuel-grade ethanol.
- 8.5 million litres of technical alcohol.
- 430,500 MWh of electricity, with supply proposed to local communities or the national grid.
